I wonder why certain words bounce around in my head; perhaps it’s the melodiousness of the sound or the strangeness, at least to me, of its composition. Or . . .

Coming . . .

The image is the stuff of street corners and cartoons. A disheveled prophet carrying a placard with a hand painted message. “The end is near” or “He is coming.” We see the scene in our minds eye. The image may make us smile or give us pause. The dream of God’s coming has stirred the spiritual passions of His creation since Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden.

Thanksgiving

Most of us grew up hearing the story of the first Thanksgiving celebration by the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock.  After barely surviving a brutal winter in 1620 and 1621 the Pilgrims, managed to plant and harvest a bountiful crop in late 1621.  As was the custom of their native England they had a harvest feast.  And also as their custom they invited their neighbors the natives of the land.  This scene of the “first” Thanksgiving is not really a first but rather an extension of what God’s people have done for thousands of years.
