Making Decisions About the Future
Most of us are used to being told what to do. We have had our parents, our teachers, our bosses, our politicians, our religious leaders. As the pyramid of authority has become more and more distinctive most of us have abdicated our responsibility to make decisions. But it has not always been that way. The tyranny of authorities always seems to creep in when “we” decided that it takes too much work to make the decisions. Our nation was founded on the principle that “we the people” rule by choosing people to represent us . . . our beliefs and convictions. That concept is Biblical! When Jesus’ followers were looking to replace Judas with another apostle they gathered to gather to discuss and pray . . . then they voted. That is what casting lots was all about. (Acts 1.) When the Jewish church was faced with what to do with what to do with the gentile believers the Apostles and elders in Jerusalem got together to discuss the issue before the whole church and Luke tells us in Acts 15 that “the church decided.”“Recasting the vision” is attempting to get back to the principle of God’s Spirit in all of us leads us in directions that is stronger and wiser than His Spirit leading in any one of us. We need everyone’s input as we make decisions about where God wants New Heritage to go.This week we have a unique resource in Gailyn Van Rheenen. Gailyn is the founder of Mission Alive, a group dedicated to planting churches in the U.S. He will be joining us for our meeting following worship. Please make plans to join us for worship as we begin discussing where we are to go next. And make plans to stay for lunch and further discussion after worship.
